about

Regarding the Musée Transitoire's Impulse Response

The acoustic imprint of the building housing the third edition of the Musée Transitoire, located at 44 boulevard de la Bastille, was crafted during the residency of electronic music artist Krikor Kouchian. On the nights of October 9 and 10, 2023, recordings were made to capture the reverberation characteristics of the rooms in the Musée Transitoire, and the spaces were modeled to construct an acoustic representation. This process also involved capturing sound samples from objects left within the premises.

The convolution reverberation technique was employed, utilizing a system of speakers and microphones, to meticulously assess the resonance of each room. Priority was given to spaces that exhibited particularly engaging musical reverberation. The primary objective of this endeavor was to compile a selection of reverberations from the museum that could be integrated into the composition software of musicians.

This initiative's overarching purpose is to foster musical creativity connected to the museum, using a sonic snapshot of the location at a precise moment in time. Maël Huou provided valuable assistance to Krikor Kouchian in the execution of this project.

In terms of space selection, certain rooms presented short but striking reverberations suitable for vocals and percussion. Rooms lacking glass panels displayed architectural nuances that enhanced sound reverberation. Rooms with dynamic elements and varying ceiling heights provided diverse resonance characteristics. Notably, the second basement, a modified parking lot, with its 6-second reverberation. It served as the canvas for crafting a percussion soundscape available for free use by musicians.

Regarding the Musee Transitoire’s Sound Banks

The second subterranean level of the structure housing the third edition of the Musée Transitoire originally served as a garage, subsequently undergoing conversion into a storage facility that came to house the archives of the indepandant workers social security service (RSI). The alterations made to the spatial configurations on this floor have yielded a distinctive acoustic environment, notably prominent within the larger chamber, characterized by marked fluctuations in elevation and a parallel alignment of surfaces. This architextural re-arrangement has engendered a reverberation of 5 seconds. It is important to emphasize that this specific reverberation has been incorporated into the collection of provided impulse responses. Nonetheless, while in the room, we yielded to the temptation of recording percussion sounds generated through the utilization of on-site objects, including but not limited to metal plates, cardboard tubes, springs, metal bars, as well as our own voice.
